The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team took Region IV co-leader Moraine Valley to overtime Saturday at Kleine Field, but the Cyclones scored the golden goal in the 95th minute to beat the Chargers 4-3 and snap their five-match unbeaten streak.

After a scoreless first half, the teams engaged in a see-saw second half that included four goals and two lead changes in the final 16-plus minutes of regulation. Moraine Valley (16-1, 14-1) then won in OT on Drake Silver’s left-footed volley in the box.

The Chargers (6-10-2, 6-6-2) started the scoring in the 56th minute as Kym Marsden (Aldershot, England/Connaught) saw his penalty attempt stopped, but he was able to get the rebound and put it in.

Moraine Valley tied it in the 66th minute, but Sandburg took a 2-1 lead in the 74th as Javier Pavon (Tombull, Texas/Klein Oak) put in a header.

The Cyclones, though, grabbed a 3-2 advantage behind back-to-back goals from Vasili Vouris on direct free kicks. The first came from 25 yards out in the 74th minute, and two straight handballs by the Chargers set him up for a shot he stuffed inside the left post from 20 yards out in the 80th minute.

Sandburg found the equalizer in the 85th minute as Pavon scored his second of the game with a header in the box following a long free kick from Marsden on the right sideline.

The Chargers had a chance to win it in the 89th minute as a cross from Tumelo Matebesi (Pretoria, South Africa/Willowridge) led to another Moraine Valley handball in the box. Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) took the penalty for Sandburg, but his attempt went over the bar.

The Chargers will travel to face Waubonsee at 4 p.m. Monday in another Region IV contest.
